Intentional Spending This Black Friday: Tips to Avoid Regret
We’re deep into November, and the Black Friday ads just keep coming. Thanks to smarter AI, we are pummeled with enticing, personalized marketing, making it more tempting than ever to “buy now!”.
If you've worked with me, we've likely discussed that pit-in-your stomach feeling of regret that can sneak in when you've bought something that felt good in the moment but now has you questioning how you'll pay that credit card bill or if you should just return the item.
While I wouldn't presume to tell you what you should spend your money on, I do encourage thoughtful spending - spending with intention. Intentional spending means not buying something just "because it's a good deal!" or FOMO.
Here are the top ways I've learned to eliminate post-holiday regret:
- Who or what’s it for? Be honest about how you’ll use it. If you’re unsure, maybe it’s time to pass.
- Resist temptation: Can’t swing the cost? Don’t even peek. Browsing sales is like going grocery shopping when you’re hungry.
- FOMO hits hard: Stores push you to act fast. Remind yourself that deals come back and better prices often follow Black Friday.
- Need vs. want: Have you wanted it for days, or did you just notice it? Question if it’s really the best choice for your money.
- Body signals matter: If your heart races when you’re about to buy, pause. It could mean anxiety or misalignment with your values.
- Think bigger: Consider whether you're spending your money in a way that creates the world you want to live in. We are so much more than "consumers".
Saving 50% on a deal is nice but saving 100% by not spending your hard-earned cash on something you don't actually need/want is better.
Good luck out there!
